Austism
It was once though that children exhibiting autistic behaviour had a psychiatric disorder, ie. That their mental illness was caused by environmental deficiencies such as poor parenting. However, recent research has indicated that autism is actually caused by some form of organic abnormality.

The diagnostic characteristics of autism are:

(a) autistic aloofness (ie. a complete inability to engage with people and their surroundings)
(b) an obsessive desire for everything in their lives to be routine and done in the same way
(c) delayed or abnormal speech development Autistic children find it hard to cope with complex and unstructured situations and tend to resist change.

They are often Mann eristic, displaying characteristic repetitive movements and habits. There is no cure for autism but most autistic children make progress with a systematic and carefully planned approach to teaching in combination with a behaviour modification programme.
